Will I have to pay any cost or fees?
No, the Culinary Training Program is free of charge to our students. We will also provide all the course materials at no cost.

 

Is this a certification or degree program?

The Culinary Training Program is a certification program. Graduates receive a St. Joseph Center certificate of training that reflects your internship placement. Please note that we are not an America Culinary Federation accredited school.

 

What kind of job does the Culinary Training Program prepare me for?

The Culinary Training Program will prepare you for entry-level jobs in the food service industry (i.e. prep cook), but we also teach elevated cooking techniques and dishes.

What certification or degree will I receive upon completion of the program?
St. Joseph Center’s Culinary Training Program is a certification program and is not an accredited culinary school through the American Culinary Federation. Graduates of the program receive a certificate of training from St. Joseph Center that reflects the student’s internship placement.

 

Will I earn a California Food Handler Card?

Yes! California state law requires that all food handlers carry a food handler card.  The Culinary Training Program provides students with the food safety training necessary to become certified as a ServSafe Food Protection Manager.  Students will have the opportunity to take the exam during the first week of the program.  This certification is nationally recognized and is valid for five years from the test date.

 

Who can apply?

You must be:

  • 18 Years or Older
  • Stably Housed
  • Drug & Alcohol-Free
  • Unemployed or Underemployed
  • Clean and sober for a minimum of 90 days
  • Legally able to work in the US
  • Able to read, write and speak English (working proficiency)
  • No major crimes of violence with weapons, sexual assaults, terrorist or arsonist threats, identity theft or warrants for arrest.

When is the next class

The Culinary Training Program is a 12-week course offered several times throughout the year.  Check our upcoming class schedule for dates.

 

What is the class schedule?

The Culinary Training Program meets for a total 12 weeks. The first 8 weeks will be at St. Joseph Center's Kitchen, Tuesday-Friday from 8 am - 4 pm.  The schedule will vary for the last 4 weeks based on each student's internship site.

 

Where is the program located?

The program is located at St. Joseph Center's Kitchen, at 204 Hampton Drive, Venice, California 90291.

 

What are you looking for in an applicant?

Students should demonstrate that they need the Culinary Training Program as a job skill and that they are genuinely interested in working in the culinary industry as a means to improve their current economic circumstances. Students should demonstrate a commitment to the job search.  A passion for food helps too!
