From Hardship to Hope: How Support and Opportunity Helped Cheraya Rebuild Her Life
After experiencing homelessness and living in her car with her young son, Cheraya found the support she needed to rebuild her life. Through St. Joseph Center’s La Ramona Family Housing and Bread & Roses Training Kitchen, she discovered stability, opportunity, and a path toward a stronger future for her family.
For 50 years, St. Joseph Center has opened doors for people across Los Angeles who are working to build stability. One of them is Cheraya.
Not long ago, she was living in her car with her young son, searching for a way forward amid overwhelming uncertainty.
Finding Stability at La Ramona
That changed when she came to St. Joseph Center. At La Ramona Family Housing, the organization’s first fully owned and operated housing community for families, she found what she and her child needed most: a place where they could finally feel safe and begin rebuilding their lives.
The site provides supportive housing for families experiencing homelessness and has become a lifeline for parents working to create stability for their children.
Building a New Future
With stability taking root, Cheraya soon enrolled in the Bread & Roses Training Kitchen, St. Joseph Center’s culinary workforce development program.
Earlier this year she completed the training and is now working toward launching her own pop-up food business. The skills she gained, along with the encouragement she received, gave her the confidence to take her next steps and build a stronger future for her family.
The Impact of Community Support
St. Joseph Center data shows that families who complete their stay at La Ramona have a 93 percent success rate in transitioning to permanent housing. That success reflects the combination of housing, support services, and community that families find there.
Last year, St. Joseph Center supported thousands of families across Los Angeles with housing assistance, meals, mental health care, and other essential services. These supports help parents and children stay safe, stay connected, and move toward long-term stability.
Cheraya’s journey is a reminder of the difference community support makes. Her experience shows how stability, opportunity, and care help families rebuild their lives and look toward a brighter future.
Today, she is working toward launching her own business, creating new opportunities for herself and her son while building on the foundation of stability she found at St. Joseph Center.
