Ahmad
Ahmad Muhammad, a 25-year-old man, had already faced more hardship than many experience in a lifetime. Growing up in an unstable environment, he became homeless at a young age. When we first met Ahmad, his experiences had understandably left him deeply reserved. He didn’t trust easily, rarely spoke, and carried a worried expression, like a deer caught in headlights.
Despite his initial apprehension, Ahmad was always well-mannered and respectful. Over time, through consistent and caring engagement, he slowly began to trust us. We believe that genuinely connecting with those we serve starts with showing them we care.
Once Ahmad received his housing voucher, we were able to relocate him to a temporary motel closer to his E6 housing team, a specific internal team designation. Simultaneously, he began receiving support from the Leslie Intensive Case Management Services (ICMS) Scattered Site program. The dedicated individuals on these teams were instrumental in building upon our initial connection with Ahmad, continuing to provide crucial support, build rapport, and address the significant mental health challenges he faced.
Initially, when Ahmad began working with the E6 housing team, he remained largely isolated. He would barely open his motel room for check-ins and rarely responded to messages. However, the teams remained persistent, understanding the depth of his past trauma. He viewed many apartments but declined them, often seeming lost in his thoughts.
Over the past year, the teams continued their dedicated work, focusing on building a strong foundation of trust with Ahmad. They diligently showed him potential housing options and consistently checked in on his well-being. Crucially, Ahmad was connected with the Mental Health Specialist on the team. Through fostering a positive and caring relationship, their collective efforts finally led to Ahmad being successfully housed just last week.
Ahmad’s journey beautifully embodies the mission of St. Joseph Center: the collaborative effort to provide the inner resources and tools necessary to help our members become productive, stable, and self-supporting members of our community. The staff at SJC made every effort to provide Ahmad with a welcoming and safe place where he was treated with compassion and respect throughout his journey. We celebrate Ahmad’s resilience and the dedication of everyone involved in supporting him.
