Ashanti

Ashanti’s life story is a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and the transformative power of opportunity. Her name, inspired by a strong African tribe, reflects the strength and perseverance that have defined her journey.

From an early age, Ashanti faced immense challenges, including poverty, gang violence, and significant personal struggles. The birth of her daughter marked a turning point. Despite experiencing homelessness, motherhood ignited a fierce resolve to change her circumstances.

Ashanti’s path led her to a shelter in Venice, California, where she connected with the St. Joseph Center. There, she discovered Codetalk, a program that equips low-income women with computer coding skills, opening doors to the tech industry. This opportunity proved transformative, providing Ashanti with not only valuable professional skills but also renewed confidence and a sense of purpose.

Ashanti embraced the challenges of the Codetalk program, dedicating herself to her studies and ultimately graduating. She describes her Codetalk experience as life-changing, providing her with the platform and skills needed to pursue a meaningful career in a dynamic and growing field.

Ashanti’s journey continued with an internship at Warner Bros., where she focused on data science and analytics. She expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support and guidance she received from the St. Joseph Center staff, her instructors, and her classmates. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s words, Ashanti embodies the principle of

“being the change she wishes to see in the world.”
