Safe housing made it possible for a mother and son to reunite
For Cassie Patton, the most painful part of experiencing housing instability was not the uncertainty or the fear. It was being apart from her son.
“And the pain of not being with your child is something you carry every day.”
“When you don’t have a safe place to live, everything else starts to fall apart,” Cassie said.

When Cassie connected with St. Joseph Center through HOPICS, she was navigating housing instability alongside ongoing health concerns and the emotional toll of family separation. More than anything, she was searching for stability so she could reunite with her son.
That stability came sooner than she expected. Within six months, Cassie secured permanent housing and was reunited with her child, a moment that reshaped their lives.
“Having a clean, safe space marked a turning point.”
A home gave Cassie more than a place to sleep. It offered safety, privacy and relief from constant uncertainty. With stable housing in place, she was able to move beyond day to day survival and begin focusing on her family’s future.
“A place where my son and I could finally breathe.”
“St. Joseph Center gave us a safe environment,” she said. “A clean space.”

Along the way, consistent encouragement and respectful support helped Cassie stay engaged even when progress felt slow. Feeling seen and supported made it possible to keep going through moments of doubt.
“Everyone here treated me with kindness,” she said. “When you’re already carrying so much, that makes all the difference.”
Today, Cassie continues to manage health challenges while raising her son, taking each day as it comes. Having a home has eased the constant fear of losing what she has worked to rebuild.
“There are still hard days,” she said. “But someone is always there to encourage you, even when you’re down.”
Looking back, Cassie emphasizes the importance of persistence and self advocacy, especially for parents navigating complex systems while trying to keep their families together.
“Don’t give up,” she said. “If someone says no, keep going. Find another path.”
At the center of her journey is one truth that continues to guide her forward.
“Having my son back changed everything.”
Today, Cassie is managing her health, continuing her education, a long held dream, and building a stable life for her son. The path has not been linear, but having a home has made forward movement possible.
“Sometimes things don’t happen as fast as we hope,” she said. “But that doesn’t mean they won’t happen.”
Cassie’s story reflects St. Joseph Center’s holistic approach to care, supporting parents and children together by addressing housing, health and emotional well being. It is a reminder that stable housing is not only about walls and doors. It is about keeping families together.
As part of 50 Stories for 50 Years of Impact, Cassie’s journey shows what becomes possible when families are met with safety, dignity and sustained support. Because of donor generosity and compassionate staff, parents like Cassie can reunite with their children and begin building a more secure future, together.
