Raymee recognized that addressing his mental health was key to achieving his goals and worked with his case manager to ensure access to the necessary resources. In April 2024, Raymee began his journey to PSH (permanent supportive housing) through the St. Joseph Center ODR Housing program. He demonstrated a strong commitment to positive change, consistently attending appointments, adhering to his medication regimen, and following program guidelines. His case manager, Jennifer, diligently built a strong, trusting relationship with Raymee, providing consistent encouragement and guidance, navigating the complexities of the healthcare system, and working to secure housing. She helped Raymee stay focused on his long-term goals, offering emotional support and celebrating his successes.

Raymee Smith came to St. Joseph Center after graduating from the ODR FIST (Felony Incompetent to Stand Trial) program. The Office of Diversion and Reentry (ODR), within the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, develops and implements programs to divert individuals with serious mental, physical, and/or behavioral health needs away from the Los Angeles County Jail and into community-based care. His determination to change his circumstances fueled a remarkable journey, overcoming numerous challenges, including jail visits and hospitalizations.

The FIST program prioritizes individuals found incompetent to stand trial, facilitating their transition from jail to community-based settings tailored to their needs. FIST reduces wait times for state hospital placement, and graduates can transfer to the ODR Housing program for support in obtaining permanent supportive housing (PSH).
