Rick

As St. Joseph Center honors National Volunteer Month, we shine a light on the incredible dedication of Rick Nelson. A California native with deep roots in Venice and Santa Monica, Rick faced unexpected early retirement from his long-time custom furniture business.

In January 2020, during the pandemic, he bravely sought mental health support and a renewed sense of purpose. A simple online search led him to St. Joseph Center, a discovery he now calls

“the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Rick’s commitment was evident during the pandemic. While others stayed home, he was the sole volunteer who consistently came in on Thursdays to help Chef James pack lunches and serve drinks outdoors. This dedication fostered a close bond and ensured vital support continued for those in need.

What keeps Rick returning week after week? The strong connections he’s formed with fellow volunteers, whom he considers close friends, and the individuals he serves. He finds profound meaning in the simple act of providing a meal and treating everyone with respect and kindness. Rick cherishes the hugs and positive interactions, focusing on the good being done rather than the overwhelming challenges of homelessness. He even carries Chef James’ business cards to share information with those he encounters who may need the Café’s support. Rick’s unwavering positivity and genuine care embody the spirit of volunteerism, making a difference in our community.
