From Hardship to Hope: How Support and Opportunity Helped Cheraya Rebuild Her Life

Once living in her car with her young son, Cheraya found safety and stability at La Ramona Family Housing and a new path forward through the Bread & Roses Training Kitchen. Today she is working toward launching her own pop-up food business and building a stronger future for her family.
For 50 years, St. Joseph Center has opened doors for people across Los Angeles who are working to build stability. One of them is Cheraya. Not long ago, she was living in her car with her young son, searching for a way forward amid overwhelming uncertainty.
That changed when she came to St. Joseph Center. At La Ramona Family Housing in South Los Angeles – the organization’s first fully owned and operated housing community for families, she found what she and her child needed most: a place where they could finally feel safe and start rebuilding their lives. The site provides supportive housing for families experiencing homelessness and has become a lifeline for parents working to create stability for their children.
St. Joseph Center data reports that families who complete their stay at La Ramona have a 93 percent success rate in transitioning to permanent housing. This is a reflection of the services and community offered there.
With stability taking root, Cheraya soon enrolled in the Bread & Roses Training Kitchen, St. Joseph Center’s culinary workforce program. Earlier this year she completed the training and is now working toward launching her own pop-up food business. The skills she gained, along with the encouragement she received, gave her the confidence to take her next steps and build a stronger future for her family.
St. Joseph Center’s impact extends far beyond La Ramona. Last year, the organization supported thousands of families across Los Angeles with housing assistance, meals, mental health care and other essential services. These supports help parents and children stay safe, stay connected and move toward long-term stability.
Cheraya’s journey is a reminder of the difference community support makes. Her experience shows how stability, opportunity and care help families rebuild their lives and look toward a brighter future.
